Day Camp 2009: Theme and Unit Descriptions

Color Your Summer: Themes for 5-7 Year Olds - Dane County

This summer your child can choose from ten weeks of classic summer fun, exploring and learning through arts & crafts, cooking & snacks, music & drama,  sports & games, science & construction nature & outdoors, field trips and more!  Throughout each week, campers will receive colored beads for completing different types of activities and can collect them as they color their summer!

Fun at the Fair

Experience classic summer fun at the county fair! Visit the animals, sample the food, see the displays, listen to the music and try the games. You will have a fair amount of fun back at camp too, making your own fair food, 4-H art projects and midway games!

Happy Camping

Venture into the great outdoors! Visit area parks, beaches and trails. Set up tents, make nature crafts, go on a scavenger hunt and encounter wildlife. Have a cookout complete with s'mores, campfire stories and songs. Have fun outdoors with other happy campers!    

Kids on the Move  

See how much fun sports and fitness can be! Try dancing and other creative movement. Share and play your favorite games.  Take a break and sample healthy snacks. Learn about your body and how to stay safe and healthy. Get outside and have fun in the sun!

Make a Splash!

Warm days and cool water. The perfect combination!   Play water games and try water experiments. Learn about fish and animals that live in water. Sample slushies and frozen treats made with water. Have a beach party. It's sure to be a splash!

  

My Big Backyard   

Summer fun is right outside your door!   Chase down bugs and butterflies.   Learn and play lawn games and sports.   Build a fort, have a picnic and collect items for nature crafts. Go beyond the backyard and explore the neighborhood around camp.    

Show and Tell

Camp is a place to express yourself and get to know others! Share your talents.   Show off your sports skills or favorite collections. Display artwork or other constructed creations. Share and listen to stories and songs. Make and share your favorite recipes.

Under the Big Top

It's circus time! Paint your face and clown around. Try juggling, perform a balancing act and see what you can do with a hoola-hoop. Learn about circus animals, create circus posters and sample circus snacks.   Practice unique skills and perform your very own circus acts!          

World Travelers

Summer camp is your passport to adventure! From planes and trains to boats and buses, explore the world of transportation and travel. Experience food, music, dance, clothing, sports, games, art, nature, animals, customs and cultures from around the world!

Zoo Safari

Encounter wild animals, their habits and habitats, and the efforts to protect them. Take a safari to your local zoo and get to know all about how the zoo operates and how the animals are cared for. Explore the wild side of games, songs, crafts and snacks!

101 Science Experiments

Experience 101 gooey, slippery, slimy, weird, awesome, magical, bizarre, incredible, oozing, bubbling, dripping, bouncing, fun experiments and discover the answers to your tough science questions!   There is a $10 activity fee for this unit.

Design and make something that sparkles! Try different materials like sequins, glitter, metals, fake gems, crystals and more.  Learn about authentic gems, precious stones and the tools and materials that jewelers use.

Baker's Dozen

Learn the basics of baking by creating and eating a variety of delectable baked goods. Use recipes and create your own. Share your recipes and treats with family and friends by creating a cookbook or having a bake sale.

Ball Sports

Learn and play traditional favorites like baseball, football and basketball. Discover some new and unique ball games and sports that you may not have tried before.

Batter Up!

Play ball! From the sandlot to Cooperstown, explore the game of baseball while learning the skills, strategies, and fun of playing the game.   A baseball glove in good condition is required for this unit.

Bead Bonanza!

Use beads made out of different materials such as glass, wood, clay, paper and plastic. Create necklaces and friendship bracelets or use beads as a decorative accent for picture frames, hair accessories and more!   Go bead crazy!

Bird Watchers

Chirup, chireep, chireep, chrup, chireep. What bird is that? What do birds eat?   Where do birds live? Why do birds sing? Become an amateur ornithologist and join us for a look at Wisconsin's 400 plus species of birds and all they do. Discover what birds live in your backyard and beyond. Make your own bird feeders, build a birdhouse, start a bird watching journal and explore local parks and ponds for birds!

Body In Motion

Move your body through dance, exercise, martial arts, yoga, obstacle courses and a variety of group and individual active games. See how much fun physical fitness can be.

Camp Crafts

From useful tools to beautiful art - learn classic camp crafts using natural materials.   Make lanyards, pet rocks, clay beads, painted pottery, and macramé projects.   Discover the nature behind the art and the fun things you can create!

Camp Out

Learn basic camping skills from tent set-up to outdoor cooking from a Wander Wisconsin trip leader. Enjoy hiking, fishing, swimming, making new friends, campfire stories, s'mores and more! The week will include an overnight camping trip to an area state park. A packing list for the overnight will be mailed to all participants.   There is a $35 fee for the overnight.

Chocolate

Who doesn't like chocolate? Let's see how creative you can get using all forms of chocolate from milk chocolate and white/dark chocolate to hot fudge and cocoa.   Bake, melt, dip, mold and get ready to indulge in the decadence of chocolate!

Clue Quest

Embark on a weeklong journey, working as a team, learning new skills, visiting cool places and solving a variety of riddles and puzzles as you follow the clues to a top-secret final destination!

Collage and Mosaics

Use all kinds of shapes, colors, and materials and bring them all together in a creation that is uniquely yours! Use tiles, paper, seeds, glass stones, photographs and more.   From design to display, learn the art of collage and mosaics.

Cool Waters!

Explore the substance that covers most of our planet. Have fun doing wet and wacky science experiments, seeing what lives in water, and the many ways people use and have fun in the water. It's sure to be a splash!

County Fair

The Dane County Fair is cotton candy, carnival rides and so much more! Experience the Dane County Fair and continue your school-year involvement in 4-H (participants need not be 4-H members); see project and animal exhibits, be on hand for judging, and have a great time at the fair! There is a $15 fee for the fair.

Crazy Concoctions

Mix, taste, touch, smell, drink, see and even hear all kinds of wacky creations! From chemistry in the kitchen to whipping up a batch of "gak," we've got the recipe for creative fun!

Critic's Choice

You be the judge!   From movies to taste tests you decide your favorites. Create a Best Of list for a variety of categories. Learn how to be a critic while respecting the preferences of the critics around you.

Cultural Arts

Adventure awaits you as you expand your knowledge of different cultures through the arts. Move your body to the beat of different cultural rhythms. Make your own instrument and create music from around the world. Enjoy stories from African and Native American cultures, and many more. Play games that children in other countries play. Create works of unique cultural arts and crafts.

Cultural Cuisine

From pasta bowls to sushi rolls, learn to prepare and enjoy a variety of foods from around the world! Share your delicious food and special recipes with other campers.

Dance is the poetry that the body speaks without words. Learn dances such as Ballroom, Salsa, Country Line Dancing, Square Dancing, Hip-Hop and more. Discover new moves and choreograph your own routines. Even if you've never danced before, camp is a safe and fun place to try.

Eco-Safari

Do you like catching frogs and chasing down bugs and butterflies? Come on a safari adventure and get an up-close look at nature's unique and beautiful creatures. Visit the Arboretum and area parks, learning where to find and how to properly observe the wildlife you discover.

Fantastic Journey

Journey into the world of fantasy where monsters and heroes lift your imagination to new heights. From Magic Cards and Munchkin to Dungeons & Dragons, enjoy a variety of role-playing games and the stories behind them.

Fashion & Style

Develop your own personal style! Have fun matching (or mismatching!) clothing items, hair styling, putting on make-up and accessorizing. Learn to appreciate other people's choice of style.

Flower Power

Explore the wonderful world of flowers! Visit local flower shops and gardens. Seek out wild flowers. Plant flowers. Photograph and draw flowers. Learn about flower arranging and floral crafts.

Football

Are you ready to start your road to the Super Bowl? Come learn the strategies and rules while you work on your skills and design your own plays. No tackling allowed.

Go Fore Golf

Fore! Learn the basics of golf. Tee off at the driving range. Practice your putting on the wild and wacky carpeted landscapes of a mini-golf course. Challenge yourself on a par three golf course. Give disc golf a try.   There is an activity fee of $15 for this unit for mini-golf, driving range and course fees.

 

Great Chefs

To sift or to strain, sauté or first drain. Learn some basics of cooking while concocting a variety of delectable dishes. Try others' recipes or create your own. Enjoy the fruits of your labors, too!

Great Chefs-Appetizers and Entrees

Bon Appetite! Learn what it takes to plan and create a meal as you explore a variety of tasty dishes. Make attractive appetizers and simple main dishes. Start with some basics and learn to create your own so you can plan a picnic, make supper for your family or even host a dinner party.

Great Chefs-Desserts

Learn some basics of cooking and baking while creating delicious desserts. Mix a variety of ingredients such as fresh fruit, chocolate, ice cream, pudding and other sweet treats! There will be time for tasting so save room for dessert!

Great Chefs-Frozen Treats and Beverages

Sodas, slushies, sundaes, smoothies, and sunshine!   Come to camp and enjoy a week of creating and tasting delicious ice-cold creations! Yum!

Great Inventors

Discover how ideas become realities and how inventions are developed. Learn about history's great inventions and inventors. Increase your creativity, and build your own inventions to solve a variety of problems.

Here's your chance to try sewing, and other types of needlework and fiber art. Sew by hand or use a sewing machine. Learn a variety of fiber art skills and styles like macramé, knitting, cross-stitch and more!

Give juggling a try! Do tricks with a yo-yo! Go retro and learn some classic games like marbles and jacks. Play hacky-sack! Build these and other unique skills using a variety of wacky toys.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Calling all actors, directors, writers, camera operators and editors. Let's create a T.V. show! We will be spending part of our week at WYOU T.V. learning about all that goes into producing and presenting a live television show. Spend time in front of the camera as well as time learning about and interacting with the cameras and video equipment. There is an activity fee of $30 for this unit.

Madison Lakes

Explore the world in, on and around the waters of Madison. Enjoy canoeing, hiking, swimming, fishing and visiting points of interest around the lakeshores.   Must have a valid Red Cross Level III Swim Card or equivalent.  There is an activity fee of $35 for canoeing with Rutabaga Outdoor Programs.

Memory Makers

Design scrapbooks, greeting cards and keepsakes. Use words, photos, arts and crafts to create a variety of projects you can take home and share as gifts.

Nature Art

Seek and find natural materials like acorns, pinecones, seeds, bark and more! Create beautiful crafts such as leaf rubbings, rock mosaics, wood burning designs, carved walking sticks, sand candles, wreaths and picture frames.

Olympiad, The

It's time for the Olympic games as you compete in various summer sports! Learn all about the Olympics, the events and the spirit of the games. Plan, participate and be an Olympian!

On Stage

All the world's a stage, and you're on it! Experience all parts of a production - from set construction, costumes, and make-up to show time. Take part in designing your own theatre and play.

Over the Net

Play badminton, ping pong, volleyball, tennis and other games that feature nets. Learn the rules and the techniques of these games as well as some fun variations, such as "Newcomb," beach ball volleyball and mini-tennis. Maybe even invent a new game!

 

P

Line

Painting and Drawing

Create your own works of art while learning and practicing painting and drawing skills. Have fun expressing yourself and using a variety of materials from watercolors, oil, acrylic and fabric paints to chalk, crayons, charcoal and colored pencils.

Pedalers

Pedal your way through basic bike maintenance and safety and take bike hikes around town. This unit is provided under the leadership of a Biking Unit Director and the Camp Specialist. A multi-speed bike in good working condition, a bike helmet, and a bike lock are required for this unit. There is an additional fee of $10 for this unit.

Photography

Have fun going places and taking pictures while learning photography skills. After taking and processing lots of pictures, we'll put together some great picture books and displays! We'll explore color and black & white photography as well as digital. There is an additional fee of $15 for photo processing.

Practicing Picassos

Get inspired by Pablo Picasso's creative legacy.   Here is your chance to try drawing, painting, clay and other mediums. Take part in designing your own projects and set up an art show.

Ready, Aim, Fun!

Put your aim to the test in a variety of ways. Archery, bowling, mini-golf, horseshoes and others are all included in this week of "fun and aims"!   There is an activity fee of $15 for this unit.

Recipe for Art

Become both an artist and a chef by using food to create beautiful works of edible art, including food sculptures, cake decorations, and creative presentations of appetizers and desserts. Choose your favorite colors, shapes, flavors and toppings to add pizzazz to your plate!     

Recycled Art

See how you can make art from the many things that are thrown away. Use paper towel tubes, glass jars, newspaper, plastic and more to create earth friendly craft ideas for holidays or any day. Go green!

Sculptors

Create your own original works of sculpted art using a variety of materials such as soap, wax, newspaper, various types of clay or food. Learn sculpting techniques and how to use specific sculpting tools as you develop your skills.

Sidewalk Sales

Rummage sales, lemonade stands, craft sales and bake sales.   Choose and create your very own summer sales! Enjoy a special treat with the money you earn.

Soccer

Learn basic soccer techniques, game rules and strategies through drills, exercises, and games. See what makes soccer the world's most popular game!   Soccer shoes &

Sports Around the World

Ever wonder how to play cricket? Ever want to be in on a rugby scrum? Here's your chance to play sports which are popular in other countries. Some possibilities include Jai alai, Australian rules football, rounders, lacrosse and table tennis.

Summer Hoops

Learn the basics or work on your moves. Summer Hoops offers a variety of basketball drills, activities, and scrimmages to help you play the game and have fun in the sun.

Survivor!

Experience the outdoors like never before! Learn survival techniques with minimal equipment and supplies.   Learn about the unique survival strategies of nature's critters. Spend a day at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center building a fire, constructing a shelter and searching for food.   Get ready to survive!   There is a $15 activity fee for our day at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center.

Tennis

Learn basic tennis skills, including how to score. Practice forehands, backhands, baseline shots, and serving. Develop your own form on the court and get ready to play singles or doubles matches to show off your new skills. United States Tennis Association affiliated.

Track & Field

Run-Jump-Throw! See how fast or how far you can run, how far you can jump, and how far you can throw. Learn all about the exciting events of Track & Field from sprints, hurdles and relays to jumps and throws. Invent and try new events too! You could be the next Olympian!

Trailblazers

Practice the skills of orienteering while you explore area parks and trails. Learn how to use a compass and read a map to navigate from point to point. Make trail mix, have a scavenger hunt and discover some amazing views while hiking the trails and leaving no trace so you and others can enjoy return visits.

Tropical Rainforest

The tropical rainforest is the home of many unique and beautiful creatures. From the Amazon to New Guinea and Southeast Asia, take a most amazing journey into the heart of the rainforest to learn about the valuable resources it provides and how we can help preserve them.

Ultimate Angler

Explore different species of fish, how they live and how they taste. Catch and prepare them while learning basic fishing skills. Enjoy field trips to the area's fishing hot spots!

Unbelievable Flying Objects

If it flies, we can do it! Kites, boomerangs, airplanes, helicopters, frisbees, foxtails, aerobies and lots more! Build 'em, fly 'em, throw 'em, catch 'em and have an unbelievably good time. Build and launch your own model rocket! There is a $10 fee for the model rocket.

Wet N' Wild

Explore and understand the fascinating worlds of water and the aquatic habitats they support. Discover the wildlife in the ponds, streams, and lakes right here in our own "backyard."  Spend a day discovering the many pond and marsh plants and animals at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center.   There is an activity fee of $15 for our day at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center.

World Beat

Listen to the rhythms of the world's music while learning to create and play your own! Experience and sample a variety of musical styles from Latin, Jazz, Celtic, Country, to Rock & Roll, Funk and Hip-Hop. Make your own rhythm instruments and discover that rhythm and music can be found anywhere and played everywhere.

Beach Party

Aloha!  Spend the week like a true island boy or girl with grass skirts, fruity drinks, and flowered leis. Play water games on the beach and build sand castles in the sun.  Celebrate summer at the Friday Luau!

Bug Buddies

You'll get down to their level, dirt level that is. Do you know where bugs live? What do they eat? Get your hands dirty and find all the answers.

Busy Builders

How high can we go?  Which is stronger: straw, twigs or bricks?  Work together and on your own to build towers, forts and other creations, learning all along the way!

It Makes "Sense"

Look, listen, touch, taste and smell the world around you. Explore your five senses and which sense is the most important to you.

Madagascar Party

Create some of your own summer adventures while enjoying fun activities. Learn about the stars of the recent movie Madagascar. Follow the adventures of this foursome of friends as they journey away from their zoo home.

Marching Madness

Have you ever been to a parade?  The marching and bands are a big part of the excitement.  You will try lots of fun instruments and make some of your own.  Let's put on a parade!

On the Farm

Spend the whole week exploring farm life and what it's like to be a farmer. Make puppets of your favorite farm animals.  What kind of foods do farmers eat?  Let's try some!

Set Sail for Summer

Explore the watery world of oceans and beaches. Learn how to talk like a pirate, create sand castles, along with a week of introduction to the campus surrounding the camp.

Summer Games

Explore the value of cooperative play and games. How about a game of tag?  Would you like to play "Candyland"?  How about dressing up and putting on a play?  Lots of fun and silliness will come your way!

Summer Send-Off

The summer is coming to an end, but there is still time for lots of summertime silliness with your camp friends.

Common Senses

The common thing about senses is that we all have them. Spend a week in a variety of activities exploring your five senses. Campers will learn about each of the senses through a variety of activities. Each day will be devoted to a different sense. They will learn how those without that sense function; learning tidbits of sign language and Braille.

Fine Mess, A

Why do fun and messes usually go together?  From splatter painting to creative cooking, spend the week doing the messiest activities possible. Campers should bring older clothes, an extra change of clothing and a smock each day of camp.

Let's Celebrate

Celebrations come in many shapes, sizes and forms - just like you and I! What makes a celebration special? What makes you unique? Discover a unique talent or unusual celebration and share it with the group.

Imagination on the Run

Tap into your creativity with puppet performances, making arts and crafts masterpieces or performing dramatic reenactments and musical melodies.

Practicing Picassos

Satisfy that creative urge!  Here is your chance to try drawing, painting, clay and other mediums.  Take part in designing our own projects.

Summer Camp Games

Classic camp games and the latest in outdoor group games!  Try some outdoor challenges, cooperative games, and unique sports equipment.  Create and play your own group games.

Summer Send-Off

Pirate's hidden treasures. Treasure chests filled with gold, silver or jewels.  Scavenger hunts, treasure maps and hide n' go seek will all be part of this exciting week of surprises.

World Beat

Listen to the rhythms of the world's music while learning to create and play your own!  Make your own rhythm instruments. Be your own instrument!  From electric drum pads to table tops, discover that rhythm can be found anywhere and played everywhere.

Global Gallery

Explore a wide range of art forms from around the world. Create art of your own using traditional techniques and materials.

Hoops, Chutes and Ropes

Enjoy a variety of individual and group challenges using unique games equipment. Play

classic camp games and create some games of your own. End the week with a trip to Adventure Rock and a climbing experience under the direction and supervision of the camp and climbing wall staff. There is a $15 activity fee for our experience at Adventure Rock.

In the Cards

The fun is in the cards during this week of playing, learning and creating card games and card activities, traditional and new. We'll also have some fun with other types of cards like sports cards and other game cards.

Lawn Games

Cut the lawn and pour the lemonade. Croquet, bocce ball, soccer, bean bag toss, golf and Frisbee are just a few of the games we will enjoy.

Let the Games Begin

That's the sound heard around the world for the start of the Olympic Games. Do you know how many different Summer Olympic sports there are? Swimming, track and field, baseball, basketball, badminton, table tennis and tennis are just a few. Try your hand at as many as you can. Which sport will be your favorite?
