Day Camp 2008: Theme and Unit Descriptions

Passport to Adventure: Themes for 5-7 Year Olds - Dane County

This summer your child will travel around the world, through space and time, exploring and learning through crafts, snacks, music, games, experiments, field trips and more!  Upon completion of each week, campers will receive a stamp in their Summer 2008 Adventure Passport!  The Passport to Adventure takes each camper to the following "destinations":

America the Beautiful

From the Hawaiian Islands to the Rocky Mountains, across to the Atlantic Ocean, the United States of America is the ultimate summer travel destination! This week features summer favorites like swimming, baseball and apple pie!  You will travel back in time to 1776, when we became a nation, as you experience colonial crafts, early American sports and games, and old-fashioned recipes!

Big Chill, The

Cool off as you explore the Arctic Circle and Antarctica! Learn about the Inuit people, and the many animals able to survive in these extreme parts of our earth. Explore how life in Wisconsin is having dramatic effects on these areas. Experiments, "survival" games, frozen treats, polar bears and penguins are sure to keep you cool all week long!

Fun at the Fair

Celebrate our great state with a trip to the county fair!  Visit the animals, sample the food, see the displays, listen to the music and try the games!  Discover interesting Wisconsin facts and symbols and visit local landmarks. You will have a fair amount of fun back at camp making your own food, music, 4-H projects and games.

Island Life

The Caribbean islands support many unique ecosystems ranging from cloud forests to cactus scrub lands. You will experience it all, including a trip back in time to the 17th century to explore the “Golden Age of Piracy". Life on the islands would not be complete without playing at the beach!

Out of This World

Travel beyond our planet earth and through space and time! This intergalactic week is sure to inspire you to imagine what life would be like on other planets and in the future!  Discover other worldly snacks, sports, crafts, experiments, costumes and music. Boldly go where no field trips have gone before! 

Rainforests & Ruins

Come explore Central and South America!  Discover some of the hundreds of thousands of plants and animals that can be found in tropical rain forests. Experience the mysterious life of the Aztecs, Mayas and Incas through costumes, foods, games, crafts, creative construction and unique field trips.

Summer Olympics

Next Stop, Beijing and the 2008 Summer Olympic Games! You and your friends will meet with groups from other sites to participate in team and individual sports and games. In addition to learning about good sportsmanship, you will also learn about the host country, China, by exploring Chinese calligraphy, practicing and performing Dragon Dances, and trying ethnic foods!

Wild Safari

Travel back to ancient Egypt, and explore life along the Nile River during the construction of the Great Pyramids! From there, journey along the Nile as you discover modern tribes and African wildlife. Traditional sports, games, dance, drums, pyramids, and animals will make this a week to remember!

Wonders Down Under

G'day mate!” This week you will go “down under” to the Great Barrier Reef, discovering Australian wildlife and the life of the Aborigines. Spend time exploring the neighboring islands of the South Pacific. Delicious “tucker” (food), beach parties, kangaroo games and outback adventures are sure to turn your world upside down!

101 Science Experiments

Experience 101 gooey, slippery, slimy, weird, awesome, magical, bizarre, incredible, oozing, bubbling, dripping, bouncing, fun experiments and discover the answers to your tough science questions!   There is a $10 activity fee for this unit.

Advanced Biking

Try more advanced biking including some all-day bike trips and mountain biking.  This is an advanced course that requires biking proficiency and stamina.  This unit is provided under the leadership of a Biking Unit Director and the Camp Specialist.  A multi-speed bike in good working condition, a bike helmet, and a bike lock are required for this unit.  There is an additional fee of $10 for this unit.

All That Glitters

Design and make your own jewelry! Try different materials like flowers, clay, metal, paper, beads and more. Learn about gems and the materials that jewelers use.

Backyard Barbecue

Prepare and enjoy grilled favorites, salads, fruit, snacks, ice-cold beverages and, or course, desserts. Share your delicious food and special recipes with other campers and families.

Baker's Dozen

Learn the basics of baking by creating and eating a variety of delectable baked goods.   Use recipes and create your own.   Share your recipes and treats with family and friends by creating a cook book or having a bake sale.

Ball Sports

Learn and play traditional favorites like baseball, football and basketball. Discover some new and unique ball games and sports that you may not have tried before.

Batter Up!

Play ball! From the sandlot to Cooperstown, explore the game of baseball while learning the skills, strategies, and fun of playing the game. A baseball glove in good condition is required for this unit.

Bead Bonanza!

Bead a bunch of beadin' buddies and hang 'em from your backpacks!   Go bonkers with your bunch o' beadie babies and alien beadin' beings.   With a billion beads create a beautiful bead bonanza beyond belief.

Body In Motion

Move your body through dance, exercise, martial arts, yoga, obstacle courses and a variety of group and individual active games. See how much fun physical fitness can be.

Bus Stops Here, The

The city bus is your ticket to a week of adventure and fun field trips! You and your group will decide where you want to go and then figure out how to get there by learning how to use the city bus system. There is a $15 fee for bus passes.

Camp Crafts

From useful tools to beautiful art - learn classic camp crafts using natural materials. Discover the nature behind the art, and the fun things you can create!

Camp Out

Learn basic camping skills from tent set-up and repair to outdoor cooking. A great introduction to our Wander Wisconsin program. The week will include an overnight camping trip to an area state park. A list of required items will be mailed to all participants, e.g. clothing for overnight. There is a $35 fee for the overnight.

Canoeing

Learn basic canoeing skills and safety on the great lakes of Madison.   Participants will spend three days under the supervision of Supreme Watersports' trained instructors learning and practicing the fundamentals of this great sport!   Must have a valid Red Cross Level 3 swim card or equivalent. There is a Supreme Watersports fee of $30 for this unit.

Cartoon Creations

Cartoons are for everyone!   Explore the creation and construction of cartoons from building the story to artwork and lettering.   Create cartoons and characters of your own!

Carving Artists

That's right, carving! Carve your creativity into wood, plaster, soap, Styrofoam, fruits and vegetables. Carve your very own walking stick or totem!   Add some finishing touches to your projects with some painting and wood burning.

Clue Quest

Embark on a weeklong journey, working as a team, learning new skills, visiting cool places and solving a variety of riddles and puzzles as you follow the clues to a top-secret final destination!

Collage and Mosaics

Use all kinds of shapes, colors, and materials and bring them all together in a creation that is uniquely yours!   From design to display, learn the art of collage and mosaic.

Construction Zone

"Build it and they will come?" No! If you come we will build it! Use a variety of materials including traditional construction toys, wood, cardboard, marshmallows (?), you name it! Check out some of the cool buildings in the city and learn a bit about architecture. If you like building stuff, this is the unit for you!

County Fair

The Dane County Fair is cotton candy, carnival rides and so much more! Experience the Dane County Fair and continue your school-year involvement in 4-H (participants need not be 4-H members); see project and animal exhibits, be on hand for judging, and have a great time at the fair! There is a $15 fee for the fair.

Crazy Concoctions

Mix, taste, touch, smell, drink, see and even hear all kinds of wacky creations! From chemistry in the kitchen to whipping up a batch of "gak," we've got the recipe for creative fun!

Credible Edibles

Explore the world of nutrition by making exciting, healthy, tasty creations and then eating them!   Develop a Credible Edibles Kids Cookbook and share your recipes with friends and family.

Critic's Choice

You be the judge!   From movies to taste tests you decide your favorites.   Create a "Best Of” list for a variety of categories.   Learn how to be a critic while respecting the preferences of the critics around you.

Cultural Art

Adventure awaits you as you expand your knowledge of different cultures through the arts. Move your body to the beat of different cultural rhythms. Make your own instrument and create music from around the world. Enjoy stories from African and Native American cultures, and many more. Play games that children in other countries play. Create works of unique cultural arts and crafts.

Cultural Cuisine

From pasta bowls to sushi rolls, learn to prepare and enjoy a variety of foods from around the world!   Share your delicious food and special recipes with other campers and families.

Journey into the world of fantasy where monsters and heroes lift your imagination to new heights. From Magic Cards to Hero Quest, enjoy a variety of role-playing games and the stories behind them.

Farm ‘N' Garden

Visit an area farm, as well as local farmers' markets and gardens.   Find out how many items at the grocery store are produced right here in Wisconsin. Learn about planting and caring for a garden. Roll up your sleeves and join the fun.

Fashion & Style

Develop your own personal style!   Have fun matching (or mismatching!) clothing items, hair styling, putting on make-up and accessorizing. Learn to appreciate other people's choice of style.

Fiber Arts

Here's your chance to try sewing, and other types of needlework and fiber art as you design your own projects with your specialist.

A Fine Mess

Why do fun and messes usually go together? Spend the week doing the messiest activities possible, from splatter painting to creative cooking with your hands. Campers should bring older clothes, an extra change of clothing and a slop smock each day of camp.

Flower Power

Explore the wonderful world of flowers! Visit local flower shops and gardens. Seek out wild flowers. Plant flowers. Photograph and draw flowers. Learn about flower arranging and floral crafts.

Football

Are you ready to start your road to the Super Bowl? Come learn the strategies and rules while you work on your skills and design your own plays. No tackling allowed.

Go Fore Golf I

Fore! Get out on the green and putt around. Tee off and learn the basics of golf. Offered with the support of the Golf Foundation of Wisconsin. There is an activity fee of $15 for this unit for mini-golf, driving range and course fees.

Go Fore Golf II

Continue to build your golfing skills.   Golf II requires a basic level of skill and a genuine interest in golf.   Learn more techniques and play on a real golf course. Offered with the support of the Golf Foundation of Wisconsin.   There is an activity fee of $20 for this unit for mini-golf, driving range and course fees.

Going Bugee

Everything you always wanted to know about bugs. Learn about different species, explore natural habitats, and start your own collection.

   

Great Chefs

To sift or to strain, sauté or first drain. Learn some basics of cooking while concocting a variety of delectable dishes. Try others’ recipes or create your own. Enjoy the fruits of your labors, too!

Great Inventors

How might you construct a bridge with only one piece of paper that will hold a heavy book? Discover how ideas become realities and how inventions are developed. Learn about history’s great inventions and inventors. Learn to increase your creativity, and build your own inventions to solve a variety of problems.

The fun is in the cards during this week of playing, learning and creating card games and card activities, traditional and new. We'll also have some fun with other types of cards like sports cards and other game cards.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Calling all actors, directors, writers, camera operators and editors.  Let's make a movie! We will be spending part of our week at WYOU T.V. learning about video production and using real T.V./video equipment! Bring some fun skill and movie ideas, and we'll create our very own video!  There is a $30 activity fee for this unit.

Madison Lakes

Explore the world in, on and around the waters of Madison. Enjoy hiking, boating, swimming, fishing and visiting points of interest around the lakeshores. Must have a valid Red Cross Level 3 swim card or equivalent.  There is an activity fee of $30 for this unit.

Magic Show

Now you see it, now you don't! Experience the fun of magic tricks and what it takes to become a magician. Be part of a show you and your friends create. Guaranteed to be a magical week!

Make a Splash!

Explore the substance that covers most of our planet. Have fun doing wet and wacky science experiments, seeing what lives in water, and the many ways people use water have fun in the water. It's sure to be a splash!

Memory Makers

Design scrapbooks, greeting cards and keepsakes. Use words, photos, arts and crafts to create a variety of projects you can take home and share as gifts.

Model Magic

Enjoy the experience of model building. Design and build your own models expanding your creativity and model building skills along the way. There is an additional fee of $15 for this unit for purchasing models.

Why do people like music so much?   Explore and experience the evolution of music and its instruments. Listen to a variety of musical styles. Play a variety of instruments. Create your own instrument!   Sing some karaoke! Make music with your friends!

No Strings Attached

Learn about the art of puppeteering - from hand puppets to marionettes.   Explore the art of puppet making as you create your own cast of characters and build your own show.

All the world's a stage, and you're on it! Experience all parts of a production - from set construction, costumes, and make-up to show time. Take part in designing your own program.

Over the Net

Play badminton, table tennis, volleyball, tennis and other games that feature nets. Learn the rules and the techniques of these games as well as some fun variations, such as "Newcomb," beach ball volleyball and mini-tennis. Maybe even invent a new game!

Paper Arts

Discover the many arts and uses of paper making paper, paper airplanes and origami, newspaper sculptures, calligraphy, paper marbling and so much more. Learn all about this valuable resource and how to make it last!

Pet Shop

Cats and dogs, birds and snakes. Discover more about your pet and others while learning proper care for the variety of creatures people have as pets.

Photography

Have fun going places and taking pictures while learning photography skills. After taking and developing lots of pictures, we'll put together some great picture books and displays! We may even choose some outstanding shots for future camp brochures! There is an additional fee of $15 for photo processing.

Physics Fun

Explore the physics all around you. Try a variety of experiments and activities involving motion, heat and thermodynamics, electricity & magnetism, light, sound and wave motion, and modern physics topics.

Practicing Picassos

Satisfy that creative urge! Here is your chance to try drawing, painting, clay and other mediums. Take part in designing your own projects.

Put your aim to the test in a variety of ways. Archery, bowling, mini-golf, horseshoes and others are all included in this week of "fun and aims"! There is an activity fee of $15 for this unit.

Recipe for Art

Learn how to make your own paper, paint and glue from scratch. Learn how to create a variety of colors by mixing the basics. Make peanut butter play dough and other deliciously edible art!

Recycled Art

See how you can make art from the many things that are thrown away. Great craft ideas for holidays or any day, and earth friendly, too.

Create your own original works of sculpted art using a variety of materials. Learn sculpting techniques and how to use specific sculpting tools as you develop your skills.

Sidewalk Sale

Rummage sales, lemonade stands, car washes, craft sales, ice cream stands and bake sales. Choose and create your very own summer sale! Enjoy a special treat with the money you earn.

Skating Basics

Come learn more about two of the fastest growing sports on wheels.   Learn basic skills and safety rules, and enjoy the fun!   Inline skates and a skateboard in good working condition, approved helmet, wrist guards and kneepads are required for this unit.

Simple Machines

Develop a sense of how technology fits into your everyday life and how the technology we have today came to be. Combine your own ideas with the elements of machines to imagine and design inventions to solve specific challenges.

Soccer

Learn basic soccer techniques, game rules and strategies through drills, exercises, and games. See what makes soccer the world's most popular game! Soccer shoes & shin guards required.

Spice Rack

Be both a scientist and an artist as you learn to cook with spices. Experience a variety of spices from basic to exotic. Practice how much to add and how to combine flavors.  

Sports Around the World

Ever wonder how to play cricket? Ever want to be in on a rugby scrum? Here's your chance to play sports which are popular in other countries. Some possibilities include Jai alai, Australian rules football, rounders, lacrosse and table tennis.

Sportz Morph

This unit has all of your favorite sports and games, but with a twist!   You and your group will get to experiment with different boundaries, rules, variations and equipment to create variations of traditional sports or maybe event invent a new sport!

Suburban Safari

Do you like catching frogs and chasing down bugs and butterflies?   Come on a safari adventure and get an up-close look at nature's unique and beautiful creatures. Spend Monday at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center learning where to find and how to properly observe the wildlife you discover. There is an activity fee of $15 for our day at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center.

Summer Hoops

Learn the basics or work on your moves. Summer Hoops offers a variety of basketball drills, activities, and scrimmages to help you play the game and have fun in the sun.

Survivor!

Experience the outdoors like never before!   Learn “survival” techniques with minimal equipment and supplies.   Learn about the unique survival strategies of nature's critters. Spend a day at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center building a fire, constructing a shelter and searching for food.   Get ready to “survive!” There is a $15 activity fee for our day at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center.

Toy Lab

Spend a week exploring the toys of the past and the future. Design and build your very own toys. Take a behind the scenes tour of the toy store and find out where all the toys come from and who makes them.

Track & Field

Run-Jump-Throw!   See how fast or how far you can run, how far you can jump, and how far you can throw.   Learn all about the exciting events of Track & Field from sprints, hurdles and relays to jumps and throws.   Invent and try new events too!   You could be the next Olympian!

Ultimate Angler

Explore different species of fish, how they live and how they taste.   Catch and prepare them while learning basic fishing skills. Enjoy field trips to the area's fishing hot spots.

Unbelievable Flying Objects

If it flies, we can do it! Kites, boomerangs, airplanes, helicopters, frisbees, foxtails, aerobies and lots more! Build 'em, fly 'em, throw 'em, catch 'em and have an unbelievably good time. Build and launch your own model rocket! There is a $10 fee for the model rocket.

We Think You Can Dance

Spend a week with friends learning new moves, and creating and designing your own routines. Even if you've never danced before, we think you can do it and camp is a safe and fun place to try!

Wet ‘N' Wild

Explore and understand the fascinating worlds of water and the aquatic habitats they support. Discover the wildlife in the ponds, streams, and lakes right here in our own "backyard."   Spend a day discovering the many pond and marsh plants and animals at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center. There is an activity fee of $15 for our day at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center.   

 

What's For Lunch?

If you're tired of wimpy sandwiches every day for lunch on the go, try a variety of creative ideas to spice up your brown bag.

What' So Funny?!

What do you think is funny? Have a good laugh doing comedy from jokes and riddles to clowning and juggling. Write a joke book and put together a show for your friends.

Wok on the Wild Side

The wok is the primary cooking vessel for the regional cuisines of China and other Asian countries. Discover the art of Asian cooking made easy as you take a Wok on the Wild Side!

Woodworking

Learn basic woodworking skills. Enjoy finishing projects you can take home.  A good introduction to woods, tools, and project design.

Zap It!

Gain independence and have a lot of fun as you cook wholesome foods in a microwave oven. In addition to trying easy and fun recipes, learn some cooking basics like measuring, nutrition, and safety.

Break out the beach blankets and start planning for this sandy celebration of beachy-keen music, games and beach inspired art.

Bug Buddies

You'll get down to their level, dirt level that is. Do you know where bugs live? What do they eat? Get your hands dirty and find all the answers.

Busy Builders

How high can we go?  Which is stronger: straw, twigs or bricks?  Work together and on your own towers, forts and other creations, learning all along the way!

Can You Kazoo?

Music, melody, and marching feet will fill the air during this week of making music. You will try lots of fun instruments and get involved making some of your own!

Circus Days

Help to create the thrills and magic of the circus! Our circus will be complete with crazy costumes, performance arts, face painting, juggling and more.

Madagascar Party

Create some of your own summer adventures while enjoying fun activities and learning that introduces the stars of the recent movie “Madagascar”. Follow the adventures of this foursome of friends as they journey away from their zoo home.

Monkey Business

Follow along with Curious George on daily adventures and activities that build on this series of children's books.

Set Sail for Summer

Explore the watery world of oceans and beaches. Learn how to talk like a pirate, create sand castles, along with a week of introduction to the campus surrounding the camp program.

Summer Send-Off

The summer is coming to an end, but there is still time for lots of summertime silliness with your camp friends.

Have fun exploring math and learning the names of new friends while discovering

Creative, Crazy and Colorful

Create, construct, color and let your imagination go crazy. Make your very own works of art that you can take home. Learn the recipes for some crazy concoctions. Discover the fun of creative construction with all kinds of toys and materials. What will you create?

Edible Science

Play with food! what makes a vegetable green? Why are some chocolates bitter? Through taste tests, experiments, and observations learn about the science of food.

Farm & Garden
Visit an area farm, as well as local farmers’ markets and gardens. Do some planting and harvesting of your own.

Let's Celebrate

Celebrations come in many shapes, sizes and forms - just like you and I! What makes a celebration special? What makes you unique? Discover a unique talent or unusual celebration and share it with the group.

Make Something Out of Nothing
“One person’s garbage is another’s treasure” is the advice we will be following. Take a look at using recyclable materials and turn them into masterpieces. From abstract art to sculpture, campers will create something wonderful out of nothing.

Native American Art
Explore the wide range of Native American art forms. Create art of your own using traditional techniques and materials.

Sunshine, Swimming and Sandcastles

Enjoy the last week of summer camp having fun in the sun! Have a beach party! Go for a swim! Who wants to build a sandcastle? What about a sand creature? Enjoy all the best that summer has to offer before heading back to school.

Ticket to the Show

Don't miss this show! Create and perform using puppets, movies, cartoons, masks, storytelling or any other creative path your group explores.  Be part of the Friday Festival of Shows!

Zoo Safari
A week of exploring wild animals, their history and habitat, and the efforts to protect them. We’ll take a safari to our local zoo and get to know all about how the zoo operates and how the animals are cared for.

Be prepared to decorate, cook, dress up, and of course eat throughout the week.
