Video Production

July 20-31, 2009 (1:00-4:00 p.m.)

Ages 11-15

$215 for both weeks

Spend two weeks exploring the art and science of video production while creating a real documentary!   After an overview on the first day of camp, campers will choose one of two focus areas:   Group I - Camera/Studio/Live Mixing on Location or Group II - Video Editing.
The subject of our video production project will be the Circus Arts Immersion Camp that is happening at the same time as Video Production Camp. We will create a documentary style video of the circus camp including the finale performance.
Throughout the two weeks we will work with the professionals at WYOU and use their studio, mixing, camera and editing equipment.   The camp is based at Cherokee Middle School, but a great deal of time will be spent at WYOU working with their editing software (Final Cut Pro) and studio equipment, as well as at Wisconsin Youth & Family Center shooting video of the Circus Arts Immersion Camp.
At the conclusion of the camp, campers and families will receive a DVD copy of the documentary.
This two-week camp is more hands-on and advanced than our day camp Lights, Camera, Action! unit and Middle School U Video Production Course and is for campers with a sincere interest in video production.

Ages 8-15

Location:

  Wisconsin Youth & Family Center

  1201 McKenna Blvd.

  Madison, WI 53719

Price: $425 for both weeks

Spend two weeks exploring modern circus arts!

During the first week, we will dabble in low-flying trapeze, clowning, juggling, pantomime, set design, costuming, and acrobatics.. We will take a field trip to Circus World Museum in Baraboo, where we'll see live performances!  We'll also get to see, hear about, even touch bright and colorful artifacts from the rich history of the American Circus.  We'll also travel to Mazomanie to see the place where the famous Ringling Brothers first performed, and watch another youth circus in rehearsal.

In our second week, we will set up our very own circus tent!  In addition to adding new skills and disciplines (such as stiltwalking and Spanish Web) to our repertoire, we will develop our very own circus acts and show.  Then we'll showcase these skills for families and friends at a spectacular end-of-camp performance!

Our Circus Arts Immersion Camp is staffed by professional performers who wish to share their love of the circus with the next generation.

Spanish Language Immersion Camp

August 3-14, 2009 (9 am - 4 pm)

Ages 8-15

Location: Cherokee Middle School, 4301 Cherokee Dr., Madison

Price: $425 for both weeks

Benefits of learning a second language

We think it is important for people to learn a second language for many reasons.   Learning another language gives people a chance to step into another culture which foster's a greater ability to communicate and understand other cultures.   Studying another language also involves a variety of learning skills such as cognitive development, mental flexibility, creativity, problem solving and reasoning skills.   In addition to cognitive benefits, the study of foreign languages helps with learning some important life skills. Because language learners learn to deal with unfamiliar cultural ideas, they are much better equipped to adapt and cope in global society. They also learn to effectively handle new and different situations.   Language learners also gain a greater understanding of their own language and culture and how other cultures see them.   Knowing other languages effectively increases the number of people on the globe with whom you can communicate.

Why Learn Spanish?

More than 350 million people worldwide speak Spanish as a first language and over 50 million people speak it as a second language making Spanish the world's third most spoken language.   Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the United States with neighboring Mexico having the largest Spanish speaking population. According to the U.S. Census, the estimated number of Hispanics in the U.S. as of July 1, 2005 is 42.7 million. In the U.S. more and more, opportunities are increasing for those who are fluent in both Spanish and English.   Learning Spanish will give students greater opportunity to connect in new ways with people in their community, schools, and travel.

Spanish Language Immersion Camp will explore the customs and cultures of Spanish speaking countries in an interactive classroom. Students will develop vocabulary, and apply their knowledge of the language through games, songs, dance, crafts, sports, stories and dialogs.  Students will have opportunities to cook and eat authentic foods from countries where Spanish is spoken, and discover how daily life is spent in these countries.   Many of our caring professional staff are native speakers from Columbia, Mexico, Peru, and Puerto Rico and love to share their traditions and cultural practices.

Each day will include a concentrated theme-based session in Spanish language to develop the vocabulary necessary to carry out activities centered around the theme either at camp, in and around the community, or as part of the field trip.   Campers are encouraged to use the language whenever possible including meals, breaks, and field trips.   Camp staff are fluent in Spanish and will primarily use the target language in communicating with campers.   The ultimate goal of the program is an immersion experience in language and culture that inspires participants to continue to seek and learn about other cultures and languages.
